How to Use Emoji Choice Cards

Emoji Choice Cards allow you to ask a single or multiple choice question using emojis as the answer options. They give participants a fast, visual, and expressive way to respond. These are particularly well-suited for mobile and conversational chat formats.

Types of Emoji Choice Cards

There are two Emoji Choice Card types:

Type

Description

Single Choice Emoji

The participant selects exactly one emoji. Selecting a new emoji automatically deselects the previous one.

Multiple Choice Emoji

The participant can select one or more emojis. Each emoji toggles on and off independently.

Adding an Emoji Choice Card

  1. Open the question picker in your chat within Chat Hub.

  2. Navigate to Selection Questions.

  3. Select Single Choice Emoji or Multiple Choice Emoji. The card opens in authoring view.

Setting Up Your Emoji Choice Card

  1. Adding Question Text

Click the question text field at the top of the card and type your question.

  2. Adding Emoji Options

Each answer option requires an emoji and a text label. You can add emojis in two ways:

    • Paste directly: Click in the emoji field and paste the emoji character from your clipboard or system emoji keyboard.

    • Emoji picker: Click the emoji picker icon to open a searchable picker. Find emojis by name or keyword.

After selecting an emoji, enter its text label in the text field.

Controlling Label Visibility for Participants

By default, emoji labels are not shown to participants, they are for authoring and research purposes only. You can enable the Labels Toggle when labels add clarity for participants.

Scenario

Recommendation

Emojis are self-explanatory
(e.g., πŸ‘ / πŸ‘Ž, or an emotion scale πŸ˜€ πŸ™‚ 😐 πŸ™ 😒)

Labels not needed

Emojis represent specific product characteristics, brand attributes, or abstract concepts

Enable the Labels Toggle

Enabling the Labels Toggle

  1. In the question card options, click Enable Labels Toggle.

  2. A Labels Toggle button will now appear in the responding view.

  3. Participants can click the Labels Toggle to switch from the emoji grid to a list view showing each emoji alongside its label.

What Participants See

Emoji Grid

Participants see all emoji options displayed in a visual grid. They tap or click an emoji to select it. On selection, the emoji along with it's text label shows in the selection box so participants know what they picked. To deselect a choice, participants click the X in the selection box.

Labels Toggle (when enabled)

If you have enabled the Labels Toggle, a button appears in the responding view. When clicked, the grid switches to a list view showing each emoji paired with its label. This helps participants make informed selections when emojis represent specific or abstract concepts.

Exclusive Options (Multiple Choice Emoji only)

Exclusive options appear below a visual divider in the emoji grid. They work like exclusive options in a standard Multiple Choice card:

  • Selecting an exclusive option deselects all other choices.

  • Selecting any non-exclusive emoji deselects any active exclusive option.

A common use case is adding a "None of these" or "Not applicable" emoji as an exclusive option.

Additional Features

Emoji Choice Cards support all standard choice card functionality:

Feature

Description

Randomization

Shuffle the order of emoji options for each participant to reduce position bias. Enable from the choice set settings.

Masking

Show only a subset of emoji options based on a participant's answers to a previous question. Configure in the choice set settings.

Piping

Pipe answer choices from a previous question into the emoji choice set. Use the pipe controls in the choice set settings.

Display Logic

Control when the entire question appears, or when individual emoji choices appear, based on prior responses. Add display logic from the question's Actions menu.

Previewing Your Card

Before publishing, use the Preview functionality to see how your Emoji Choice Card will appear to participants.
