Rank Order

How to set up a rank order question?

A rank order question asks respondents to prioritize a list of items by ordering them from most to least preferred. Unlike a multiple choice question where respondents simply pick options, rank order captures the relative importance of each item, giving you richer data on how things compare to one another.

Use rank order when you need to understand:

  • Which features, attributes, or options matter most to your audience

  • How priorities differ across segments

  • Preference order when respondents would otherwise select everything

Creating a rank order question

To add a rank order question to your chat:

  1. Open the question picker and select Rank Order under Selection Questions.

  2. Enter your question text.

  3. Add your choices. A minimum of two choices is required. You can populate choices dynamically from a previous single choice, multiple choice, or rank order question, so only items relevant to that respondent appear.

  4. You can randomize the order in which choices are displayed, and anchor specific choices to always appear in a fixed position.

  5. Enable media gallery to attach an image to each choice, turning the question into a visual ranking task. Respondents can tap any image to view it full-size before ranking.

  6. Create a choice as exclusive (e.g., “I don’t use any of these”) to give respondents the option to skip ranking entirely. When selected, all other ranked items are cleared and Submit is immediately enabled. Exclusive choices are displayed in a separate section below the ranking area so it is visually clear they are not rankable items. If media gallery is enabled, you can turn off the image requirement for an exclusive choice individually through its Actions menu or the media gallery settings.

Setting selection limits

By default, respondents must rank all choices before they can proceed. You can change this to give respondents flexibility or to focus on top priorities:

  • Minimum - respondents must rank at least this many choices before the Submit button enables.

  • Maximum - respondents can rank up to this many choices, but no more.

  • Exact - set minimum and maximum to the same number to require a precise count.

If you set selection limits, update your question text to tell respondents how many items to rank. Helper text can be toggled on to show a prompt in the question UI, but it is off by default.

What participants see

When a rank order question appears in the chat, respondents see a list of available choices and an empty ranking area. To build their ranking, they tap choices in the order they want to rank them, the first choice tapped is assigned Rank 1, the second is assigned Rank 2, and so on. Respondents should tap in the order they want, from most to least preferred.

Once choices are ranked, respondents can adjust their ranking:

  • Drag and drop a ranked choice to reorder it

  • Tap the rank number on a choice to manually set its position

  • Tap the minus button on a ranked choice to remove it back to the available pool

  • Tap Reset to clear all rankings and start over

The Submit button enables once the respondent has met the minimum ranking requirement. If an exclusive choice is selected, Submit enables immediately and all previously ranked items are returned to the available pool.
