Setting Up Rival Pop on Your Website

How to install Rival Pop on your website and get ready to display embedded Rival chats?

Rival Pop lets you invite website visitors to take a Rival chat at the right moment in their journey, without leaving your site. Setting it up is a one-time task for each website: you register the site in Rival Pop, add the Rival Pop script to your pages, and allow your website to display embedded Rival chats.

Once your site is set up, you can create campaigns and popups and connect different Rival chats without adding a new script for each one.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A Rival Pop account. Rival Pop is set up for your organization by the Rival team. Contact your Customer Success representative to get started, and they will work with us to create your account. Once your account is ready, you can log in here.

  • Admin-level access to your Rival Research Domain settings, which you need to whitelist your website domain

  • Access to your website's HTML or website management platform, or a website administrator or developer who can add the script for you

Registering your site

  1. Log in to Rival Pop and click Sites in the top navigation.

  2. Choose to register a new site.

  3. Fill in the site details:

    • Site ID (required) - A short identifier for your site, such as my-site. Use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only. The Site ID is included in your installation script.

    • Site Name (required) - A name your team will recognize, such as My Website.

    • Site URL (required) - The full URL of your website, including https://, such as https://www.yourwebsite.com. Rival Pop uses this to validate requests correctly.

    • Description - Optional notes about the site.

  4. Click Register Site.

If you manage more than one website, register each one as its own site so you can manage its campaigns and popups independently.

Installing the Rival Pop script

  1. In the Sites list, open the site you just registered.

  2. Find the Installation Code section.

  3. Select your framework from the Your framework dropdown, such as HTML. The script updates to show the correct syntax for your setup.

  4. Copy the complete script.

  5. Open your website's HTML or website management platform and find the <head> section.

  6. Paste the script inside the <head> section, then save and publish your changes.

The script includes your Site ID, so make sure you copy it from the correct site. Add the script to every page or page template where you want popups to be able to appear. You only need to do this once per site. You do not need to add it again for each new campaign, popup, or chat.

If you don't have access to your website code, send the full script to your website administrator or development team and ask them to add it to the website.

Verifying the installation

  1. Open your website in a browser after your changes have been published.

  2. If needed, use your browser's developer tools to confirm that the Rival Pop script loads without errors

  3. Return to Rival Pop and run a test popup to check the installation or connection.

Once the script is loading, your website is ready for campaigns, popups, triggers, and embedded Rival chats.

Allowing your website to display embedded Rival chats

Rival chats shown inside a popup run on your website, so your website's domain needs to be whitelisted in your Rival Research Domain.

  1. Log in to Rival and open your Research Domain.

  2. Go to Settings > Platforms and open the Whitelisted Domains tab.

  3. Click the blue + button in the top right corner.

  4. Fill in the fields:

    • Label - A descriptive name, such as Main Website - Rival Pop.

    • Domain URL / IP Range - The full URL of your website, such as https://www.yourwebsite.com.

    • Purpose - Select Embedded Responding.

  5. Click Save.

Subdomains are treated as separate domains, so if chats will appear on more than one subdomain, add each one. For more detail, see How to Embed a Chat.

Setting site-wide defaults (optional)

The page for your site in Rival Pop also includes settings that apply to every popup on that site. You can set them now or come back to them later.

  • Visit Cooldown (minutes) - Found under Popup Behavior. Controls how popups are paced within a single visit. After a popup is shown, no other popup appears for this many minutes in the same visit. This applies across all popups on the site. Set it to 0 to turn it off.

  • Site Branding Defaults - The default look for every popup on this site: background color, text color, button color, button text color, button label, border radius, font size, logo URL, popup width, and popup position. Individual popups can override these settings, so you can set your defaults once and have new popups match your brand from the start.

  • Data Attributes - The attribute keys your website will pass to Rival Pop, such as userId or accountTier. Once you define them here, you can choose which attributes each popup receives.

Before you create your first popup

Make sure that:

  • The correct site is registered in Rival Pop

  • The Rival Pop script is published on the pages where you want popups to appear

  • The script loads without errors in the browser

  • Your website domain is whitelisted in Rival with the purpose Embedded Responding

  • Any subdomains that will host a chat have also been whitelisted

Troubleshooting

Issue

What to check

Rival Pop is not appearing

Confirm the script is on the page, your changes have been published, and the script loads without browser errors. Also confirm that a popup has been created and is active. See How to Use Rival Pop to Distribute a Chat on Your Website.

The site shows as not connected

Confirm the script you installed belongs to the correct site in Rival Pop, and that your latest website changes are live.

An embedded chat will not load

Confirm your website domain is whitelisted in Rival and that the purpose is set to Embedded Responding. Selecting a different purpose is the most common cause.

Only some pages work

Add the script to every page or page template where you expect popups to appear.

I can't register my site

Check that the Site ID uses only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and that the Site URL includes https://.
