Overview
On single-choice and multi-choice cards, you can turn any individual choice into an "Other, please specify" option. When a respondent selects that choice, a text field opens right below it so they can type their own answer instead of, or in addition to, picking from your predefined list.
This is set per choice, not per card. You can enable it on one choice, several, or none. It works the same way on single-select and multi-select choice sets.
How to enable it
Open the choice card in the chat flow editor.
Find the choice you want to add it to.
Click the three dot menu for that choice.
Select 'Add text response'.
A small text-response icon appears on the choice to show it's turned on. Hovering over it confirms: "Require participants to enter text when they select this choice."
To turn it off, use the same three dot menu and select 'Remove text response' or click on the icon.
What the respondent sees
When the respondent selects that choice, a Please specify field expands directly underneath it in the chat, marked Required.
They must enter text to continue. Leaving it blank shows: "Enter a response to continue."
There's a 255-character limit. Reaching it shows: "Maximum 255 characters reached."
Once submitted, the question locks in as answered, same as any other choice card.
Good to know
It's always required, not optional. Turning on text response for a choice means the respondent can't select that choice without also typing an answer.
Interaction with masking. If a later question masks in choices from this one, what shows up depends on whether that same choice also has text response enabled in the destination question:
If only the source question has it, the respondent's typed answer carries forward.
If the destination question also collects its own text response on that choice, the plain choice label is shown instead, with an inline note explaining why.
