This guide walks you through creating a chat on the Rival platform — from a basic single-locale chat to a multi-lingual chat with multiple locales.
Creating a New Chat
Navigate to the All Chats page from the app header.
Click the Create new button.
The Create chat drawer will slide in from the right side of the screen. Fill in the following details:
Field | Description |
Chat name | Give your chat a clear, descriptive name. (Required) |
Language (Locale) | Select the primary language/locale for your chat (e.g., English (United States)). This becomes the chat's default locale. (Required) |
Field in multiple locales | Leave unchecked for a single-locale chat. Check this to add secondary locales (see Creating a Multi-lingual Chat below). |
Chat category | Select a category for your chat: Communication, Engagement, Recruitment, Research, Other, or Demo. (Required) |
4. Click CREATE.
Your new chat opens in the chat tree view, ready for you to start adding cards and authoring content.
Creating a Multi-lingual Chat
If you need to deliver the same chat in multiple languages, you can add secondary locales during creation.
Follow steps 1–3 above to open the Create chat drawer, enter a chat name, select a Language (Locale), and choose a Chat category.
Check the "Field in multiple locales" checkbox. This enables the secondary locale selector.
In the secondary locale dropdown, search for and select one or more additional locales. You can add as many as you need.
The dropdown displays locale codes alongside names (e.g., French - fr-CA, Spanish - es-MX) so you can distinguish regional variants.
A label shows "{#} additional locales selected" as you add them.
Click CREATE.
Your multi-lingual chat is created with an empty chat tree for every locale. A locale selector dropdown appears at the top of the chat tree, use it to switch between locales as you author content.
Tips:
The CREATE button is only enabled once you have selected at least one secondary locale (after checking the multi-locale checkbox).
Clearing the default locale will also clear all selected secondary locales.
You cannot select the same locale twice.
