Getting Started
1. Turn on the Tone Suggestions feature
To start using tone suggestions:
Toggle “On” the AI menu presented in the top right corner of the authoring canvas
When this toggle is “On“ Tone Suggestion Cards will appear beside any messaging based card in your chat script.
You can review the default tone suggestion settings by selecting the Edit default tone descriptors action from the AI menu.
This will launch the Edit tone descriptors settings panel. The panel will present the current tone suggestion settings that are applied to the cards messaging in the section you are working on.
2. Editing Tone Descriptors
Tone descriptors allow you to set the desired conversational tone for your survey. You can choose one or more tone descriptors to inform the AI on how the messaging should feel.
Example Tone Descriptors:
Formal, Traditional, Mature for more conservative surveys, such as banking or insurance.
Fun, Spirited, Untucked, Youthful for casual brands, like snowboarding or fashion.
Warm, Supportive, Inclusive for health, wellness, or sensitive topics.
Steps:
Open the Tone descriptors panel - this can be launched from the AI menu to setting descriptors for the current section (see previous section), or you can set descriptors at the card level
Select the tone descriptors that align with your project or brand.
Preview how each selected descriptor will influence the tone of messaging.
3. Generating Conversational Messaging Suggestions
After selecting tone descriptors, the AI generates suggestions to improve the messaging tone.
Steps:
Navigate to the message card you want to enhance.
The AI will present suggested improvements in wording and structure based on the selected tone.
Example:
Initial message: “Please enter your age.”
Formal tone suggestion: “Kindly provide your age for our records.”
Fun/Spirited tone suggestion: “We’re curious—what’s your age? Don’t worry, we won’t tell!”
You can press the Refresh button to generate new suggestions until you're satisfied.
4. Emoji Usage Controls
Control the number of emojis in your survey messaging to match the desired tone. Emoji usage can be adjusted to fit a formal or casual style.
Toggle this action to expose / hide the emoji slider
Steps:
Use the Emoji Usage Slider to set the desired emoji frequency:
None: No emojis in suggestions.
Minimal: Occasional, sparing emoji use.
Moderate: Balanced use for casual, conversational tones.
High: Frequent emojis for playful or highly informal messaging.
Example:
If the Fun tone is selected and the emoji slider is set to Moderate, a message like "Thanks for answering!" could become:
“Thanks for answering! 😊”
5. Message-Level and Chat-Level Tone Settings
Tone preferences can be applied at two levels:
Chat-Level: Apply a consistent tone across the entire survey.
Message-Level: Adjust the tone for specific messages within the survey.
Example:
A healthcare survey might use a Warm tone for onboarding questions and switch to a Formal tone for compliance-related messages.
6. Tone Suggestions Refresh
The Refresh button allows you to generate multiple suggestions until you find a result that aligns with your brand and tone.
Select this action to refresh the tone suggestion
Steps:
After setting your tone preferences, press Refresh to receive new AI-generated messaging suggestions.
Repeat until you are satisfied with the output.
7. Apply or Copy Suggestions
Once you’re happy with the generated suggestion:
Copy the suggestion manually and paste it into the message card, or
Press Apply to directly replace the current message with the AI-generated text.
This ensures a quick and seamless workflow when refining your messaging.

Scenario Walkthrough
1. Opening the Tone Selection Panel
You’re working on a conversational survey for a banking client. You want the messaging to be professional yet welcoming.
Open the Tone Settings Panel and select Formal, Traditional, and Mature tone descriptors.
2. Generating Tone-Specific Messaging Suggestions
You highlight a message in the survey:
Original message: “Can you tell us your account details?”
AI suggestion: “Please provide your account details so we can better assist you.”
You like the suggestion, so you press Apply to update the message.
3. Adjusting Emoji Usage
You are now designing a survey for a younger, more casual brand. You select Fun, Spirited, and Untucked tones and set emoji usage to Moderate.
Original message: “Tell us your favorite gear!”
AI suggestion: “What’s your favorite gear to shred with? 🏂 Let us know! 🤙”
You refresh the suggestions and choose the best option, then apply the new message.
4. Setting Chat-Level Defaults
For product satisfaction questions, you apply Warm and Supportive tones across the entire survey chat. The AI adjusts all messages to reflect a caring and empathetic tone. For legal disclaimers, you adjust to Formal for a professional tone.
5. Research domain tone Settings
Your next survey is for a major bank, and you know the tone needs to be consistent. You set Formal and Traditional as the platform defaults for all future banking surveys, ensuring every new survey adheres to these tone preferences.
Technical Details
The Tone Suggestions feature leverages OpenAI’s chat completion endpoint, currently powered by the GPT 4.o Mini LLM.
Users can select from a list of tone descriptors that guide the AI in generating messaging. A one-shot prompt is used to instruct the AI on how to craft messaging that aligns with the selected tone while maintaining a consistent structure. Depending on the type of card, such as multiple-choice cards, specific instructions are provided to the AI for context, enhancing the quality and relevance of the suggestions.
For surveys that require emoji control, users can adjust emoji usage levels with a slider. This feature offers five different levels of emoji frequency, progressively removing one-fifth of the emojis at each level (rounded to the nearest whole emoji). This ensures users have full control over the tone and formality of the messaging.
